Last week I noticed small white spots appearing on all my fish.               These white spots are a parasite that attacks the fish.  The spots are eggs and they hatch more parasites. I panicked and bought some tablets from pet smart that are supposed to clear the parasites.  I don’t know if it was because I didn’t notice the ick in time or if  [ Read More ]

I planted lettuce, basil, and cilantro into the grow bed last week.  After only 3 days 30 lettuce sprouts began to show, the fourth day there where 47, and the fifth day over 60 plants! I really did not see this coming, what am I going to do with 60 heads of lettuce! Im definayely going to have to add more grow bed space, my grow bed / fish tank  [ Read More ]

Lettuce!

I planted lettuce, basil, and cilantro into the grow bed 3 days ago. Today the first lettuce sprouts have shown up, hopefully the basil and cilantro will not be too far behind.

Homebrew Aquaponics 2.0 A few temporary changes were made from the sketch in a previous post. 1. No rafts. Until a good source for Styrofoam is located all the plants will grow in the bio filter.           2. No fountain. Though there is still a waterfall, instead of the glass tower I have planned to use, a plastic container is being used until a drill bit  [ Read More ]

Homebrew Airlift

An air-lift works because air is less dense than water and floats. If air is pumped below the surface of the aquarium water it will shoot to the top, any water molecules in the way will move out of the way and the air bubble will float past. If the water is trapped and cannot move out of the way it will be lifted by the air. A simple air-lift  [ Read More ]

Aquaponics 2.0

I know I just posted Homebrew Aquaponics 1.5 yesterday, but I could not wait to post up my ideas for version 2.0. As I said in my last post, unfortunately my fish died and concluded Homebrew Aquaponics 1.5. Since then I have been planning ideas in my head, most my ideas involve up scaling because I’m moving into a larger house soon, but this system I drew up to put  [ Read More ]

Aquaponics v1.5

Here it is! New and imoroved Aquaponics version 1.50! As I said in my previous post, my “gutter” system as I like to call it was not cutting it.  As I learned Nutrient Film Technique has its advantages and disadvantages.  Some advantages are…. The ability to grow many plants in a small area. This makes it a good candidate for commercial gardens as seen here. Flood and drain is hard  [ Read More ]

After reading a few e-books and browsing the Backyardaquaponics.com forum I decided to give it a go.  Before I discovered aquaponics I was researching hydroponics, from everything I had read N.F.T. or Nutrient Film Technique seemed like the best system.  in N.F.T. the plants are put in individual ‘cups’ with a lot of holes in them.  The plant’s roots dangle down into a ‘gutter’ where a small nutrient rich river  [ Read More ]

Coca-Cola can pot

I have been growing some Ghost Chili, also known as Bhut Jolokia, from seeds I ordered on ebay.  I promised a friend of mine that when the plants were big enough to transplant I would give him one.  I didn’t have any pots to put the plants into so this is what I came up with! I’ve always liked the look of Coca-Cola cans, they are kinda symbolic. 1. Poke  [ Read More ]
